CaSA Architects :: Gooseberry Cottage

The Gooseberry Cottage extension was based on taking the elements that make up a historic cottage and reinterpreting in a way that is relevant to contemporary architecture. The result is a subtle but distinctly contemporary addition to the original cottage that sits harmoniously with the original house. Traditional cottage features such as stone walls and a pitched, tiled roof have been carefully detailed with expressed joints and zinc edges so as to illustrate that contemporary architecture and cottage vernacular need not be mutually exclusive.

In a challenging area of Green Belt, the proposed extension’s volume was cleverly maximised through a large proportion of it being recessed into the landscape. The extension forms a sheltered courtyard for the enjoyment of the client’s young family, with a glazed zinc bay projecting from it to provide an ideal place for a window seat from which to enjoy the view.
